Being a couch potato is a thing of the past. Today, the fashion for healthy lifestyle and healthy nutrition is capturing the hearts of conscious fellows, and along with it goes… fanfare the increasing productivity of employees! Well, no wonder! Better mood, more energy and lower absence from work is an undeniable recipe for success. Want to know more? You’ve come to the right place! Let’s get started!

Food for thought

The issue of how proper nutrition benefits employee wellness was deeply examined by Nicoletta Krauze. She compared employees from popular corporations Microsoft and Google, dividing them into two groups – those who consume unhealthy food and avoid exercise, and their complete opposite. It turned out that unhealthy eating habits can have a devastating effect on performance at work. This is a real food for thought! The overall health and well-being of employees can significantly determine professional performance, affecting the productivity of the entire company. Intriguing, isn’t it?

Good food – good mood

The busy schedule of the day and the accompanying overabundance of responsibilities causes many employees to take shortcuts when going for a lunch break. Wanting to satisfy their hunger, they reach for just any food, disregarding whether it will actually give them energy or make them sluggish and less productive. As Krauze1 reports:

Studies have shown that employees would benefit incorporating desk-based eating would allow employees to eat pre-prepared foods rather than waste time on thinking of what to buy and if it is healthy or not (Lake et al., 2016). The availability of these features on the worksite would encourage employees to live a healthful life.

After all, it is common knowledge that good food means… good mood. Employees with bad eating habits, whose diet is based on junk food, are at risk of becoming overweight and even obese, which is often accompanied by high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and depression.

It’s also worth paying attention to the problem of stress-eating by focusing on food access in the workplace. Instead of allowing employees to eat at their desks, it is better to designate an accessible cafeteria where everyone can eat at scheduled times. In such a canteen, it is crucial to implement a healthy menu, or at least increase the availability of healthier options. How about free fruits and vegetables (i.e., bananas, oranges, avocados, broccoli), which increase concentration levels while improving employee efficiency and ensuring better health at the same time? This will certainly result in better performance for the entire company.

A simple recipe for… outstanding success at work

Employees aware of the impact of their nutrition on their own well-being and productivity in the workplace is a simple recipe for outstanding success. Instead of stuffing themselves with unhealthy snacks or buying questionable lunches at nearby fast-food restaurants, we have a better idea! Employees who take advantage of properly customized lunchrooms will quickly experience loads of tangible benefits that quickly extend to the entire company, paving the way for it to gain a competitive advantage.
